I would have made a very good Brazilian

I would have made a very good Brazilian
I would have been passionate and edgy
filled with brio and bossa nova badass
playing gin with Antonio Carlos Jobim
each card a photo of a woman who breaks our heart
Ann Margaret, Sonia Braga,
a girl from Ipanema
three redheads, three brunettes and four blondes—gin
we laugh and look wistfully out the window
to the beach
all of them, all the women are beyond us
perfect, immaculate, untouchable
that is okay in Brazil
I should have been Brazilian
in my country it is against the law
to want something you do not try to take
