there is no life alone

buddha hall

there is no life alone
born without living touch
denied all contact
knowing only yourself
you could never
in a million zillion years
conjure life—
filled remotely
with all the wisdom
of all the philosophers
you would imagine yourself wise
yet, with all that wisdom
let you step outside at last
let you watch the mosquito
land and stab
drink from your blood
and your world will rock—
like Valentine Michael Smith
you will grok it all
“Thou art god,”
you will whisper
then swat the mosquito
smearing its being and your blood
across your palm—
Shiva and Christ
destroyer and savior
weeping at the door
waiting for another heart
that you might feel it beat
against your hand
